History in the Making

When future generations reflect upon these troubled times of ours, they will speak the word ferret in hushed and reverent tones and they will envy us... for we were there to witness it.

Comrades, this car boasted five - yes, five! - of these glorious statements of wild-eyed revolutionary fervour.

WTF? Are ferrets illegal in Aus? They're the official mascot of the RCMP here. Every Mountie in the Musical Ride has to keep one balanced precariously on the end of his extended lance.

Yes, yes, get your mind out of the gutter.

Anyhow, if the ferret loses it's balance and topples to the ground, the Riders all have to stop and wait for the ferret to spring back onto the lance-tip. They then sing the Song of Shame ("shame, shame on you/son of the northern skies/shame,shame on you/see how the ferrets cry"). The offending Mountie then has to finish the ride, and perform a galloping dismount into the lap of the Governor General, who then absolves him by feeding him a Timbit.

Oh, wait -- did I say ferret? I meant beaver.

The winters are long in Canada, aren't they, my maple-scented friend? We here in the blistering sunshine don't have long months of light deprivation in which to concoct such elaborate rituals. To mark significant occasions of ceremony the Australian police proudly put on their best uniform, with all buttons and buckles shining, buy a burger from a McDonald's drive-through and then shoot an Aboriginal teenager. It's not grand, but it's ours.

And you seem to be under the misapprehension that Australia has uniform laws throughout the country; not so. Ferrets are illegal in Queensland only. In addition to this, the only situation in which rabbit possession is legal in this state is in a red wine sauce.

...and should I dare to enquire as to what a Timbit might be?

(I've a suspicion the sensible answer to that is no.)

Timbit = "Donut Hole." If you don't have those down there, they're little balls of deep-fried dough that are dressed as donuts, and about the size of the hole of a donut. Sorry about the US spelling of donut, btw. Burned into my brain by my time as a donut-shop assistant manager, it was.

Oh, I see. We have those, although here they're cleverly or perhaps obscurely named "Donut Hole". The history of the name "Timbit" I'm sure is an interesting one.

Sadly, the history of the name is typically banal. Interestingly, Timbits were first marketed right after the chain's founder was killed in a car accident. Makes you wonder.

Indeed it does. Maybe he and his wife had argued about it prior to his death; she for the name, he against. Her first act as a widow was to vengefully implement the name, thereby having the last laugh after a marriage marred by his drinking, gambling and womanising. Or maybe there's another explanation.

that'd be right.... just encourage me! what ever happened to 'tough love?'- although this is more recognizable to me...'mean love'..
...'just say no', ...'just do it', ... 'just say no', ..'just do it',... you get the drift I'm sure..
Got your ticket and off you go leaving me knee deep (although finding my knees amid the flesh is an effort .. but I do have them!) in doughnuts in Garema Place..
My mother worked in Garema Place at 'The British and Foreign Bible Society' for many years.. it's still there but now, above a coffee shop.. well not a coffee shop but one of those yuppie hang outs that serve 17 flavours of coffee that you have to look like a member of the cast of 'Sex in the City' to order.. and the public toilet block that was so delicately perched smack bang in the middle of the areforementioned 'place' is gone, ... Knees clamped together looking for the 'mall' or a maccas..
I guess at least that gives relief from the doughnut marathon..
Actually ... the mist is gently rising here in Canberra, cool clean air..ahh....I am really looking forward to getting back to 38 degrees and 98% humididty! feeling like a driping model in Madame Tussand's wax works... home sweet home. You'll miss that won't you Suzette.. trekking across the world may 'sound ' interesting but what about when you are hanging out to be melted while still alive.. having the skin drop off your body from the steamy weather.. you'll miss it , you know you will. ;)
